BIOGRAPHY

Born in the Netherlands, Ted-Jan Bloemen relocated to Canada (his father Gerhard-Jan was born in New Brunswick) and joined the national team program for the 2014-2015 season. He has gone on to reach the podium at every level, quickly becoming the country’s most decorated male long-distance skater.

Bloemen spent eight years in the highly competitive Dutch speed skating system, first representing his native Netherlands on the World Cup circuit in 2007 and at the World Allround Championships in 2010 and 2012, finishing fourth overall in his debut. After failing to qualify for Sochi 2014, he made the decision to move to Canada with the hopes of finding a training environment that could help him reach his full potential, which he found in Calgary.

At PyeongChang 2018, Bloemen ended an 86-year Olympic medal drought for Canada in the men’s long-distance events, winning silver in the 5000m and setting a new Olympic record to capture gold in the 10,000m. He is a six-time World Championship medalist – which includes two silver and one bronze as a member of a resurgent Team Pursuit squad – and has captured 26 World Cup medals over the course of his career.

Bloemen was the recipient of the Jeremy Wotherspoon Award for Male Long Track Athlete of the Year in 2016 and 2018, while also brining home the prestigious Oscar Mathisen Award in 2016 for the most outstanding speed skating performance of the season.

A car racing enthusiast, he lives in Calgary with his wife Marlinde and young daughter Fiene (2019).
