Remmelt Eldering

BIOGRAPHY

Remmelt Eldering has been coaching with the Canadian long track national team since 2018, working primarily with team’s Calgary-based middle and long distances female skaters.

A native of the Netherlands, Eldering moved into coaching in 2008 following a decade long career as a long track skater. In 2012, he relocated to Canada to become the provincial coach for the Manitoba Speed Skating Association. During his time in Winnipeg, he laid the foundation for the program, one that has since seen Tyson Langelaar and Alexa Scott win multiple World Junior Championship and Canada Games medals.

Eldering returned to his birth country in 2015 to take on a head coaching role at the Regional Training Centre in Groningen. The biggest accomplishment of his coaching career came a few years later in 2018, when he led then 22-year-old Dutch skater Esmee Visser to a gold medal in the 5000m at the Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

Eldering accepted a position with the Canadian national team program following PyeongChang 2018 and has had tremendous success to date. He has helped Ivanie Blondin and Isabelle Weidemann earn multiple World Cup and World Championship medals, including Blondin’s historic silver at the World Allround Championships in 2020. He is also responsible for returning the once prominent women’s Team Pursuit squad back to the top of the international rankings.
